21,000 pani puris used to create 13-foot Ganesha idol in Pune

Pune: In a unique celebration of Ganeshotsav, Pune-based Ganesh Bhel has created a 13-foot-tall and 10-foot-wide idol of Lord Ganesha using 21,000 pani puri shells. The distinctive idol has been installed outside the eatery’s outlet on Namdar Gokhale Path (Fergusson Road). The idol was unveiled by Ganesh Bhel founders Ramesh Gudmewar and Chhaya Gudmewar in the presence of directors Rupesh Gudmewar, Dinesh Gudmewar and Anushka Gudmewar.

The initiative marks the fourth consecutive year that Ganesh Bhel has created a Ganesha idol using an innovative concept. The eatery adopts a different theme every year to celebrate the festival and promote creativity. Preparations for this year’s idol began two months ago. All 21,000 puris were prepared at the company’s own manufacturing unit, while artist Prashant Salunkhe gave shape to the idol. Special care has been taken to ensure that the puris remain intact for all 12 days of the festival.

The puris were made using leftover dough that would otherwise have gone to waste. Bamboo and paper, along with other natural and eco-friendly materials, were used for the idol’s structure. “We attempt to convey a message of environmental conservation through recycling and creativity,” said Rupesh Gudmewar. “The response from citizens inspires us to undertake such initiatives.”

Dinesh Gudmewar said the initiative held a special significance for the family. “For us, ‘Ganesh’ is not merely the name of our business but a relationship deeply connected with our lives. Each puri we made represented more than just food; we saw Lord Ganesh in every one of them,” he said.

He recalled that his parents, Ramesh Gudmewar and Chhaya Gudmewar, started Ganesh Bhel in Pune in 1978 with a simple handcart. Built on the values of authentic taste, quality and customer satisfaction, the small venture has grown into a popular and trusted brand in Pune’s food culture. Ganesh Bhel now has more than 35 outlets, with its products exported to 22 countries, he said.

“We are carrying forward the tradition started by our parents while expanding the brand through modern management, quality and innovative thinking,” Gudmewar added. The idol will remain on display for devotees until Anant Chaturdashi. The Shivmudra Dhol-Tasha Pathak performed during the unveiling ceremony, adding to the festive atmosphere.
