Aeronautical Society of India : Rubber Power Airplane Flying Competition

On the occasion of 75th anniversary of Aeronautical Society of India (AeSI), the Pune Branch of AeSI and
Symbiosis Institute of Technology have jointly organized an Innovative Rubber Power Airplane Flying Competition.

The format of the competition is to fly an airplane weighing about 8 to 10 grams, for the maximum duration, by winding the rubber loop. Internationally, such competitions are called the F1D class contest.
and are considered to be the toughest and most skill-testing competition in aero modelling. This is the first time such a competition is being organized in India.

Mr. Madhav Khare who is working in the field of aviation for the past 40 years, is the mentor for the competition. Total of 170 teams from four institutes namely MIT ADT University, Symbiosis Institute,
Ajinkya DY Patil University and Pune Institute of Aviation Technology are participating in the competition.

Special workshops were organized by AeSI in these institutions for this purpose.

The final round of this tournament will be held on 28th and 29th October in the spacious venue of Symbiosis International University Lavale.

Such competitions are purposefully organised in advanced countries right from senior school levels. Students gain a deep understanding of basic concepts in science, geometry, structures, power
management and aeronautics in the process of making a rubber airplane. This competitions develop the hands on skills, scientific temper among the students. It also develops a mindset to keep attempting something until the success.

It is observed that a person who is trained in this way can achieve success in any field.

Out of the teams that reach the final rounds, 11 leading teams will be given cash prizes and the first three teams will get an opportunity to demonstrate their skills at an International conference in Delhi.

Dr. AP Dash, President of AeSI and Diector HEMRL said that AeSI will strive to develop the young fliers in Pune, who could make a mark on the World stage in the coming years.
