Arthritis Is No Longer Just an Ageing Concern; Early Diagnosis Is Key: experts
PUNE : Arthritis is increasingly affecting younger individuals, challenging the perception that it is a condition associated only with old age. On the occasion of World Arthritis Day on October 12, experts highlighted the importance of early diagnosis, timely treatment and lifestyle modifications in protecting joint health.
Dr Vishal Chaudhari, Orthopaedic Surgeon at Noble Hospitals and Research Centre, Pune, said that “Sedentary lifestyles, lack of exercise, obesity and unhealthy daily habits can contribute to joint problems. Early warning signs such as morning stiffness, pain while climbing stairs, recurring joint pain and swelling should not be ignored,”
He explained that inflammatory arthritis, which can affect younger people, often causes morning stiffness and swelling that may improve with movement. In contrast, age-related degenerative arthritis pain typically worsens with activity. Untreated inflammatory arthritis can cause progressive joint damage.
Relying solely on painkillers or home remedies, as they may mask symptoms without addressing the underlying condition is a problem. Maintaining a healthy weight, regular stretching and muscle-strengthening exercises can help protect joints. Newer medicines, including biologic therapies for suitable patients, have also improved the management of inflammatory arthritis.
“Persistent joint pain, redness, swelling or increasing stiffness warrants medical consultation. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can help prevent further damage and preserve mobility and quality of life,” he added.
